Acting for the camera, the artist plays the role of an antiheroic figure contrasting with the strong and masculine stereotype previously connected with the regime, whose echo reverberates through he pure and sober black and white adopted for every imagers. Mikhailov, who always investigated the boundaries of photography and its connections with other disciplines, here combines it with the atmosphere and the grammar of theatre. The viewers attend a performance that is reminiscent of the tradition of the Theatre of the Absurd, with the protagonist alone, naked, and handling a sex toy in every possible way. Although his irrational behaviour might at first glance appear like an act of celebration and relief at the end of a a grim era, through repetition it soon turns into an allegory of fear for an uncertain future - it seems like a performance for itself and the camera. The photographic frame is the prison of the performer who, unlike the photographer, cannot look beyond the dark cloth behind him.

About the artist

Boris Mikhailov (b. 1938 in Charow, Ukraine) is one of the most important chroniclers of the everyday life of a (post-) Soviet society. Mikhailov studied electrical engineering at Charkov University of Technology and initially worked as an engineer, before starting to take photographs as a self-taught artist in the late 1960s. The early series of the 1960s and 70s often show personal pictures of friends, acquaintances or partners of the artist. The world in his pictures is always unadorned and rough - everyday scenes, poverty, sexuality, despair, resignation, decay of a forgetting Eastern Europe. Mikhailov is always dedicated to the outcasts of society. His works have been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide, most recently in the Sprengel Museum, Hannover (2013), in the Berlinische Galerie, Berlin (2012), in the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2011), the Tate Modern, London (2010), the Kunsthalle Wien (2010) and the Ukrainian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale (2007). Boris Mikhailov lives and works in Kharkov and in Berlin.

Limited Edition of 500
64 Pages
Hardback
240 X 330 mm
printed duo tone on uncoated paper

ISBN: 9781907071454

A Geological Index Of The Landscape – Benoit Jeannet

A Geological Index... is inspired by Anne Cauquelin’s concept that landscape is an invention only existing through representation. Corinne Day died in August 2010, and in her first book since, we celebrate this icon of photography with a series of previously un-published early works.

Text by Glenn O'Brien
Cover fonts are designed by Pablo Ferro

Limited Edition of 1000
Hard Cover
164 pages
25.4 x 20.32 cm

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2559/3848/products/Corinne_Day_May_The_Circle_Remain_Unbroken002.jpg?v=1639669518
lucas-blalock
Lucas Blalock

WINDOWS MIRRORS TABLETOPS – Lucas Blalock

This work plays with the conventions of photography by exploring its limits and inherent contradictions. London, 1980) takes photographs at night, using the available light cast by buildings in urban centers like London, Tokyo and Los Angeles. In many cases the structures that he chooses are still under construction, little more than the skeletons of the office buildings and luxury apartments of that they are destined to become. His work is resolutely non-topographic, in the conventional sense in which photography has been used to record spaces, structures and architectural styles. There is more, however, to Cairns’s work than simply his distinctive approach to picturing the urban environment. His is a practice that accepts and embraces the photographic medium in its sophisticated entirety: from the effect use of light on analogue film, through a range of experimental darkroom processes, to an innovative and highly specialized understanding of the supports available to the photographic image in the twenty-first century. Cairns presents his work in a number of complementary but contrasting ways: from painstakingly layered and assembled artists books LDN (2010), LPT (2012), OSC (2016); to translucent films of silver gelatin applied directly to sheets of aluminium, LDN2 (2013), LDN3 (2014); to experiments with electronic ink, both in working Amazon Kindle reading tablets hacked to contain his complete work, LDN EI (2015); and on their extracted frozen screens; strange distant descendants of the daguerreotype, TYO2 (2017). Cairns was also the winner of the 2015 Hariban Prize, resulting in a residency at the Benrido Collotype atelier in Kyoto. Once again faced with the possibility of extending and expanding the photographic image through its reproducible character Cairns made a series of interventions within, and interpretations of, the collotype process LA-LV (2016). Cairns has recently begun to explore the prehistory of the digital age in several related ways, by printing his works and assembling them as montages on early computer punch cards, OSC Osaka Station City (2016) and by using the screens of outmoded digital cameras and equipment to screen and project his work. Cairns has exhibited and published widely, in Europe, the United States and Japan. And of course, “deserve” is double-edged, in the way that Mermelstein’s art is double-edged. We did not know we had these photographs coming, with the vision of the difficult world they embody. We may not know what to do with them now that we have them. We may not know what we did to deserve them. So let us receive them as a great gift."

Limited Edition of 750
Paperback
352 Pages
30.8 X 22 cm (12x10 inches)
1.863 kg (4.5 lbs)
ISBN: 978-1-907071-64-5
Edited & Designed by David Campany

PRESS
Washington Post

A facsimile of Arthur Rimbaud’s 1873 self published book Une Saison En Enfer, the Mörel edition contains Patti Smith's illustrations of Rimbaud, as well as a selection of photographs from the illustrious late Robert Mapplethorpe, selected by Patti Smith.
In both French and English (translations by the late/great Oliver Bernard) we stayed faithful the the original typography.

Limited edition of 500
Softcover, 92 pages, 18.5 x 12.5 cm

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2559/3848/products/COVER-season_in_hell_9377bcba-bb7b-4240-a855-06d99fa64408.JPG?v=1568037193
