Nathalie Herschdorfer, Director of Photo Elysée, names Another Love Story in the Best Photography Books of 2023!
"A year. That’s how long it’s been since Karla Hiraldo Voleau’s exhibition Another Love Story first opened at the MEP in Paris in 2022. A year is also the timeframe of the story chronicled in that project – a love story personal to KHV, which shifts abruptly from its climax to its end when she discovers that X, her lover, is leading a double life – a revelation that prompts the artist to question her certainties.
If reality is a lie, perhaps fiction is the remedy. KHV reappropriates her story by re-enacting it, highlighting the mechanisms behind the making of a couple. Each costume, location and image composition exists from meticulous planning from the artist, referring to call sheets and buying clothing duplicates from stores. Her work combines photography, performance and writing, and blurs the boundaries between reality and fiction, between the individual and the collective. Through this performance, KHV asserts herself as a subject and reclaims the power of her own history."
Karla Hiraldo Voleau’s artistic work focuses on intimacy as a critical space. Gender, sexuality, emotions and the body are all subjects she tackles in her photographs in order to reveal what is played out beyond appearances. The artist stages herself in her artistic projects, thereby blending autobiographical narratives and fictions. KHV reflects on the photographic medium as a fictional tool and devises a mise en scène of the feeling of love, thus showing the way we reproduce the norms and social evaluations that are supposed to define a couple, often unconsciously.
"By combining writing, photography and performance, Another Love Story, Karla Hiraldo Voleau’s new photobook with Mörel, re-narrates the final moments of a romantic relationship by casting a similar-looking actor as her ex-lover. Part-fact, part-fiction, the project abounds with emotional and ethical complexity to reclaim the power of her own history whilst also revealing how identity construction can be played out in the digital space"
"Karla Hiraldo Voleau shows how photography allows us to stage ourselves, play roles and reproduce guidelines"
'The Best Photography Books of 2023', Babelia, El País (translated from Spanish)
"Another Love Story looks at the pictures we take without thinking and shows them for what they really are. It slips inside them, it dissects them, to then stage a lie that feels truer than reality."
"Another Love Story - part fact, part fiction, part photobook, part screenplay - is one of the more daring photography projects in recent years...Karla Hiraldo Voleau has re-narrated the final moments of her relationship, which broke down in devastating fashion."
"In Another Love Story, Hiraldo Voleau channels raw emotional fallout into a deeply personal memento. The astute and daring brilliance of this series is that a large majority of these supposedly spontaneous images are fake."
"And that's what we do every time we retell a story: we connect the dots, we create connections, we extract a plot from the rubble, from the chaos of momentary impressions. Let's reread the past in the light of the present."
